Cinderella at the Old Rep

This is Birmingham's Pantomime!

BOA Group's Cinderella at the Birmingham Old Rep isn't just a classic fairytale—it's a proudly Brummie retelling that brings the city's humour, character and warmth right onto the stage. From the moment the show begins, there's a clear sense that this production knows exactly where it's set and who it's playing to.

The script is sprinkled with local references that land perfectly with the audience—jokes about the German Market, the ever-changing roadworks, and Birmingham buses all pop up, drawing big laughs without ever feeling forced. The Ugly Sisters, in particular, revel in the Birmingham banter, bickering in full-on Brummie style and making the crowd feel instantly at home.

The Old Rep itself adds to the local charm. As one of Birmingham's most historic theatres, its intimate space works brilliantly for a panto-style production. BOA Group make clever use of it, staging set pieces that feel both close-up and energetic, and the enthusiastic audience reactions ripple right back onto the stage.

There's a real sense of community pride running through the show. BOA students bring the talent and drive the academy is known for, delivering sharp choreography and confident vocals that show just how strong Birmingham's young performing arts scene has become. The ensemble numbers burst with life, and the finale—set to a feel-good pop track—feels like a full celebration of local creativity.

The Fairy Godmother adds a modern, distinctly Brummie twist to the magic, dropping in local slang and delivering her lines with the kind of dry, Midlands humour that instantly makes her a crowd favourite. Even Cinderella's transformation scene gets a local nod, with a wink to "a night out in Brum" as the magic kicks in.

Overall, BOA Group's Cinderella is a joyful blend of classic fairytale and Birmingham personality. It's warm, witty, and packed with local flavour—a production that celebrates the city as much as the story itself. Perfect for families, panto fans, and anyone who loves seeing Birmingham's young performers shine.

Cinderella runs util New Years Eve, and tickets are available here.
